Global steel production grew 1.2 per cent in April 2013 to 132.11 million tonne (mn t) compared to 130.50 mn t in the corresponding month of previous year, data from the World Steel Association shows.

It is noteworthy that nearly half of the global production has come from China at 65.65 mn t during the month. Steel output in the country grew 6.8 per cent over the same month last year, data the association shows.

Global steel production grew 1.9 per cent to 521.28 mn t during the January-April 2013 from 511.32 mn t in the year ago period.

India's steel output expanded 3.5 per cent -- nearly three times the global average growth of 1.2 per cent -- in April to 6.62 mn t.

In April 2012, India, world's fourth largest steel producer, produced 6.39 mn t, data from the organisation shows.

The country's steel production grew by 3.8 per cent in January, while in February it dropped by 0.5 per cent over the year ago period. It improved again in March by 6.5 per cent in March. India produced 6.6 mn t steel in January, 6.2 mn t in February and 6.86 mn t in March, 2013.
